Slouching towards Gomorra and Brokeback Morality

Brokeback Mountain is not your John Wayne western movie that's for sure. I haven't seen it and never will. I suppose that makes me an intolerant, hatemongering, bigoted homophobe to the logically and morally challenged elite homosexual apologists in the world. I'm not, but really, who cares. Being the militant seeker and advocate of tolerence as they are, they won't mind tolerating opposing world views...oh that's right, tolerance is desired only if it lines up with your world view, otherwise you're a $^&$%&^%^&%&*%. You'll recall, having tolerance for something means you tolerate it even if you don't agree. Let the ad hominem attacks begin.

Mike: oh that's right, tolerance is desired only if it lines up with your world view

Me: This is why the problem exists...you are so ready to FIGHT and categorize and marginalize everyone else...nobody can get close enough for a productive dialogue. Biting sarcasm will earn you no points. You'll not only NOT win people for Jesus...you'll actually drive them away, because NOBODY will want what you have...if it makes you this cynical and nasty. Why do you have to advertise to potential believers that, "If you become a Christian...you can walk and talk and act like you've been baptized in PICKLE JUICE...just...like...ME!"

I've known many good christians in my lifetime...my parents are two of the best...and neither of them would sound like this. You've been born again for some 10 years...maybe you'll grow more in years to come.

Oh, and THANKS for not responding to my comments in your post about "Nine days to Christmas, Daddy!" You've responded to everything else I've posted in other threads.

Why is it that you guys focus on the GAY ISSUE and little else? What "eats your lunch" so much about it? As much as you don't want the GAY ISSUE shoved down your throat...so do so many others NOT WANT you shoving YOUR chosen religious beliefs down OUR throats.

I'll expect a post soon from you about the movie, "Bridges of Madison County" since the movie depicts a woman whose husband and two young children leave for a few days...while she galavants off with a Life Magazine Reporter, having sex and falling in love. The tear-jerker ending culminates with her struggling with the decision to either stay with her husband, with whom she has no passion...or leaving with the photographer who awakened her lust and passion.

But, we both know we'll never see THAT post from you: it's about HETEROSEXUALS! Right?

Wow, a little testy aren't we?

Help me unpack your statement...Help me understand...

1) What problem are you talking about?
2) What do you mean by "I'm so ready to FIGHT, catagorize and marginalize?
3) Re "because nobody will want what I have". What do you think I have?
4) Where and how have I been cynical and nasty?
5) How did you come to the conclusion that I've been baptized in "pickle juice"?
6) What is your definition of a "Christian"?

To DLS:
I believe you once commented that you were once a Christian. Help me understand you...What made you a Christian? Further, you appear to not be a Christian now, what's your "beef" with Christianity now? What happened in your life that made you walk away?

Mike: What problem are you talking about?

Me: The problem of you summing up your version of the opposite side of this issue...in order to easily dismiss it.

Mike: What do you mean by "I'm so ready to FIGHT, catagorize and marginalize?

Me: You didn't just give your opinion on this film...you DEFINED what the responses to your opinion were going to be.

Mike: Re "because nobody will want what I have". What do you think I have?

Me: I don't think you have anything...just like everyone else. But...your beliefs are your beliefs.

Mike: Where and how have I been cynical and nasty?

Me: I hardly think it's productive to nitpick those issues. If you feel you've been perfectly fine...I won't argue.

Mike: How did you come to the conclusion that I've been baptized in "pickle juice"?

Me: I didn't say you...however, if you are the type of Christian who gives off an initial impression that you are NOT loving, patient, kind, longsuffering and gentle, like Jesus was...then SOMETHING is obviously wrong with whatever it is you DO have.

Mike: What is your definition of a "Christian"?

The Bible does not define Christian, but, if we are going by the majority view...a Christian is one who is CHRIST-LIKE. What that means is as varied as the many variations of Christians who define it.

Mike: I believe you once commented that you were once a Christian.

Me: Yes.

Mike: What made you a Christian?

Me: I was approached by a Christian back when I was 19...I knew very little of the world or the Bible...and the Gospel Message at that time made me want to have it. I wanted to be what God wanted me to be.

Mike: Further, you appear to not be a Christian now, what's your "beef" with Christianity now?

Me: You're right...I am not a Christian...but my beef is not with Christianity...or christ...just with some of his followers.

Mike: What happened in your life that made you walk away?

Me: Why do you think that something must have happened "in my life"? Nothing "happened". I simply began to ask questions...and failed to get them answered. The entire ball of string easily unravels when you scratch below the surface of Christianity.

You must ignore a lot in order to adhere to it. It really gives one comfort...which is why many embrace it. People need meaning to life...they need to feel secure with a God above them. Others don't need this.

However, just because they don't...is no indication that "something happened" or that they have a "beef" with anything.

What questions did you or do you have that you have failed to get answers to? If you'll tell me, I'll do my best to get the answers for you, provided you remain open minded and fairly consider the evidence.

It truly saddens me that you are not a Christian anymore. Its understandable that people have questions and doubts and its a shame that you haven't gotten the answers to your inquiry's. I'm a Christian because the case for Christianity stands like a granite mountain. I hope I can give you some information that will help you.

Okay, number one: Is God omnipotent, omniscient, omnibenevolent, and omnipresent?

No contortionist apologetics. Just answer the question directly. Yes or no for all of them...or any of them.

Mike said...

Short answer, yes. However, I've never heard of Him being described as "omnibenevolent" in the same sentence as the other three attributes you list. He is a benevolent God though.

Mike:Short answer, yes. However, I've never heard of Him being described as "omnibenevolent" in the same sentence as the other three attributes you list. He is a benevolent God though.

Me: Not omnibenevolent? Then, he's not ALL LOVING. Thanks. Didn't know that.

Be that as it may...omniscience, if you are perfectly honest, does not jive with free will. Unless of course you allow for a magic trick. If God KNOWS ALL and has always KNOWN ALL...then, if anyone has died without choosing him and is going to hell...then he knew that long before the person was ever created. He stood there saying, "Hmm. Billy Bob there will never, ever choose me. He will never do it. And I know this right now before I ever create him. Oh, well, I'll create him anyway."

He created that man to burn. No way around it. You can't say that foreknowledge isn't removing free will or causing something to happen...but if you've learned anything in law school, you understand CAUSATION. Since NOTHING existed before God...then everything that happens after he begins creating is, by default HIS fault. Especially since he's ALL POWERFUL and created things the way he wanted them. He created the world, KNOWING EACH and every person who would burn in hell...knew that MOST wouldn't choose him...but created anyway.

What you are experiencing, if your religion is true, is NOT free will, even though it appears like free will...from our limited perspective. Instead, you are simply carrying out a life that he saw from beginning to end right from the start.

If EVIL EXISTS...and God started EVERYTHING...then evil is a by product of his creating. Thus, he can never be ALL LOVING. He cannot be perfect. Imperfection can never come from perfection. It is as illogical as a round square.

If you say that he doesn't know what we will do all the time...then he is not all knowing. If he is not all knowing, then he cannot truly control all that exists...therefore, he is not all powerful.

Can you make all of this work without using the magical, "Well, God's ways are above our ways!"?

Because you guys really only ever say that when it's something that doesn't seem to make sense. If it does make sense to you...then you should have no problem explaining it logically to others.

You and I can go round and round till the sun goes down day after day...you're not really looking for answers, you're antagonistic and you're not being intellectually honest. Good "luck" to you.

Me: Nice, Mike. This is exactly what I'm talking about. You guys are incapable and unwilling to not only answer questions...but to even discuss anything.

It's easier to marginalize everybody when you summarily decide their position for them.

exactly my point.
